Review: Orphan (2009)

The tragic loss of their unborn child has devastated Kate and John, taking a toll on both their marriage and Kate's fragile psyche as she is plagued by nightmares and haunted by demons from her past. Struggling to regain some semblance of normalcy in their lives, the couple decides to adopt another child. At the local orphanage, both John and Kate find themselves strangely drawn to a young girl...

Release Date: July 24th, 2009
Genres: Suspense/Horror and Thriller
Running Time: 2 hours, 3 minutes
My rating: 4/5
I am a HUGE horror buff, and I can admit -- I was a bit skeptical at first about Orphan. "Oh, look -- another movie exploiting scary little girls." Boy, was I wrong.

This movie keeps you guessing until the very end, and even manages to avoid most of the common horror cliches I see in SO many movies today.
Ester, played brilliantly by Isabelle Fuhrman, is a charming young orphan girl from Russia with a talent for painting. She's adopted by John (Peter Sarsgaard) and Kate (Vera Farmiga) to fill the void of their stillborn daughter, Jessica. They already have two other children, and at first, Ester seems to fit into their family perfectly.
That is, until she begins to show her true intentions.
There's something wrong with Ester.
When things begin going mysteriously wrong, Kate notices ester seems to be there each time.
I can't say too much else without spoiling the ending. But I will say, if you haven't seen Orphan -- do so. As soon as you can. I know I'll be buying it on DVD when it comes out.

Welcome!

Welcome to Fade To Black Reviews, named for, of course, when a scene "fades to black".

I'm Angel, your hostess for this adventure. Here's a little about me:

- I'm an aspiring writer and amateur FX makeup artist. Oh, and I'm a photographer. And I'm in college. Yeah -- my plate is pretty full.

- My boyfriend wants to be a director. He is fairly AWESOME and will be one of the greatest directors ever.

- I'm a movie lover, and really love horror. Don't be surprised if that leaks in every so often.

I guess the rest you'll learn as we go along! Now, on to the reviews!
